: a large family of soft-finned fishes of the order Anacanthini including many important food fishes (as the cod, haddock, tomcods, pollacks) that are chiefly marine although one genus (Lota) is confined to fresh water and that have a rather elongated body, small cycloid scales, a large mouth, wide gill openings, and usually a barbel on the chin
